Runt : poem, [ca. 1930].

Ribald humorous poem or song, known in various versions and under various other titles, including "The diabetic dog", "Piddlin' Pete", and "Rex, the piddling pup", concerning the exploits of a country dog who defeats city dogs in a marking contest; sometimes attributed to Eugene Field. This version consists of ten 8-line stanzas, with first lines, "A farmer's dog came into town, His Christian name was Runt".

Eugene Field, an American writer, was born in 1850 to Rosewell Field and Frances Reed. After his mother's death in 1856, he and his brother were sent to live with a cousin in Amherst, Massachusetts. He studied at Williams College from 1868-69. He then studied for a short time at Knox College in Illinois and at the University of Missouri. He married Julia Sutherland Comstock on October 16, 1873.
